At the CSPA, our strength is the effectiveness with which we advocate for Canada’s steel producers to foster a strong and sustainable future for this strategically important sector. To support us in this mission we are seeking interested candidates for a Manager, Public Affairs position. This position is full-time and based in Ottawa.   The Manager, Public Affairs will undertake a critical function for the Association by developing and supporting public affairs activities for the organization’s federal and provincial advocacy efforts. The role will support the logistics and preparations for government meetings as well as ensure a strong and effective government contact program is maintained. The position will be expected to understand the federal lobbying act requirements, but the position’s role does not require registration under the federal lobbying act.The position will also play a key role in supporting the CSPA’s communication channels, online presence and website content management. The position will manage the expansion of the CSPA monitoring and intelligence gathering capability to improve the Association’s overall insight into trends, key threats, and opportunities for the sector. This position will also support monitoring, tracking and identifying opportunities for engagement with key media contacts or other stakeholders active within our field of interest. Under the supervision of a CSPA Director, the Manager will work closely with the full CSPA team to identify communication opportunities, refine key messages, prepare short- and long-term advocacy communications plans and execute routine communications functions. The position will work with government relations and communications consultants, as required, and support engaging and building alignment of communication messaging across the CSPA membership.    The successful candidate will be a results-oriented self-starter who thrives in a high-paced environment that fosters a strong team dynamic. Exemplary written and verbal communication skills are a must and strong marketing design skills are considered an asset.   Primary ResponsibilitiesThe primary responsibilities of the position are to: Support the CSPA’s strong government relations program by maintaining key databases, advocacy materials and engagement contact programs. Monitor and flag the activities of the federal and provincial governments as well as other stakeholders in our policy priority areas of trade, climate, Canada-US trade relations and industry/general manufacturing.Provide proactive strategic communications support to the association to advance its advocacy agenda. Prepare and maintain a calendar of external public affairs activities, inclusive of social and print media.Expand CSPA’s social media presence by managing the association’s accounts and implementing social media performance metrics.Support the preparation of key external and internal communications materials, including (but not limited to) one-pagers, member updates, infographics, and website content.Investigate and recommend public affairs activities for the CSPA staff, association members, and our industry. Support the ad hoc Communications Task Force of CSPA member companies.Participate actively in weekly CSPA team meetings and contribute to efforts with members and external consultants as required.Perform other related duties needed by the association as required and directed. QualificationsThe ideal qualifications for this position include: Post-secondary education in a related discipline.Relevant work experience in a member-based association, a relevant government department or other comparable organization.Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. French is a definite asset.Excellent organizing, prioritizing, monitoring and documenting skills.Excellent software, technology, and design skills, including Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, Member 365 database, WordPress, web-based tools, and the full range of social media applications. Experience with Canva and/or web design would be considered an asset.Good interpersonal skills, and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, consultants, suppliers, and member companies.Demonstrated pro-active mindset to take initiative in developing and prioritizing issues and methods to accomplish tasks or assignments. Adept at working under pressure, managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.Appreciation for a small team environment, where workload management requires flexibility and open communication across the team.Ability to travel within Canada on occasion.Ability to work flexible and/or extended hours on occasion.Job Details Full Time position based in Ottawa ON$70,000 - $85,000 per year depending on skills, experienceComprehensive health and dental benefits packageA hybrid work environment.Paid vacation
