The Technology Solutions Centre (TSC) team works to continually enhance the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the University of Winnipeg through judicious application of technology. Within TSC, Desktop Services team members work closely with other Technology Sector teams to ensure seamless service delivery.

The Desktop Security Support Specialist is a full-time continuing role tasked with providing desktop security support, configuration, maintenance based on Institutional requirements and standards in all desktop computing environments at the University and research computing security support.

Responsibilities:
  • Regular monitoring, analysis, and response to security incidents or threats on managed workstations, smart devices, virtual workstations and research workstations.
  • Research, evaluation, implementation and management of security solutions on Desktop Services managed virtual environment.
  • Assess the security of research workstations and collaborate with the Technology Sector team and researchers in implementing security best practices.
  • Responsible for maintaining endpoint security related documentation, licensing information, and device security deployment procedures.
  • Responsible for research, planning, coordination, and implementation of security solutions in the desktop and virtual desktop.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on endpoint device security including smartphones.
  • Serve as a liaison between desktop services and the Cyber Security team to facilitate seamless communication and coordination.
  • Using diagnostic programs, determines repairs required to workstation components and systems and carry out repairs/replacements.
  • Provides one on one training and instruction when required on operating system or application’s secure operation.
  • Analyses individual user desktop computing requirements and may make recommendations based on institutional standards to meet the user’s requirements.
  • Serves as first point of contact for security related issues on workstations.
  • Installs, configures, maintains and troubleshoots desktop operating systems such as Windows, MAC, Linux in all computing environments within the University following existing installation procedures.
  • Installs, configures, maintains and troubleshoots institutionally approved applications.
  • Installs, configures and troubleshoots desktop network clients and email clients.
  • Assists in the design, prototyping and testing of workstation hardware operating systems and application configurations to meet current desktop security requirements in small to medium sized projects.
  • Installs hard drive images and imaging.
  • Assists in the definition, development and testing of Institutional standards and processes.
  • Assists in maintaining and ensuring the accuracy of the hardware and software inventory.
  • Responsible for the completion of all paperwork required to maintain security related documentation of workstations, smart devices, and virtual environment.
  • Assists in the organization and cataloguing of physical inventory, including e-wasting of decommissioned inventory.
  • Technical documentation including completing new computing configuration and inventory information and documenting technical information for user information and technical processes.
  • Participates in creating and maintaining the departments software library.
  • Maintains current level of technical knowledge in the areas of cyber security, workstation hardware, peripherals, workstation security, operating systems and application software and related technologies.
  • May be called upon to provide internal technical expertise for new technologies with researchers.
  • Work with cyber security team on projects that may involve analysis or coordination with end user systems and clients.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline from a recognized institution, or completion of a 2-year college diploma program in computer science or related discipline from an accredited post-secondary Institute of Technology.
  • Technical skills training and upgrading ongoing throughout career.
  • Trained, skilled, and experienced in cyber security, computing hardware, operating systems and application software.
  • Holds or is working towards CompTIA Security+, certification or similar.
  • Two to three years of directly related Cyber Security experience including experience working with contractors and managing workflow or an acceptable equivalent of education and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of M365 Ecosystem, MS Defender ATP (MDE, XDR) or similar solution, Azure, MS Active Directory, Deep freeze, and Microsoft Configuration Manager for support and management of desktop systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting, troubleshooting, installation of various computer operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Mac.
  • Must be able to apply a systemic, disciplined and analytical approach to planning, designing, testing, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
  • Experience in providing guidance on standards, architecture, and best practices as they relate.
  • Project planning and project implementation.
  • Able to work and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience using and interpreting the results of testing equipment.
  • Provides expert guidance to clients, peers, and junior staff on standards, policies, and principles.
  • Knowledge of installation procedures and EIA/TIA standards.
  • Able to use office productivity software (expert), security tools (network scanning, security audit), digital multi-meter, network cable tester, and various hand tools.
  • Able to diagnose hardware faults in computer hardware, repair desktop and laptop hardware, use hard drive imaging software, and enterprise security software.
  • Experience working with external contractors in a manner that assures work is completed on time and on budget while maintaining a positive working partnership.
  • Ability to absorb large amounts of both quantitative and qualitative information in order to find simple solutions to complex problems.

The salary range for this position will be from $63,008.40 to $87,269.00 annually.
