Reporting to the Manager, Water Modelling

The Engineer or Scientist, Water Modelling (Temporary) is responsible for supporting the application of the Regional Water Quality Model and water quality data analyses to support mine planning and water management decisions at our steel-making Coal operations. This is a temporary maternity leave backfill for 18 - 22 months, with opportunity to move into a permanent position on the team when it comes up. To be successful, we are looking for a highly motivated, attentive, and organized person, who can drive and keep pace with change and innovation. This person has strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and can effectively engage with professionals across departments and at varying levels of the organization. The ability to find solutions in a fast-paced, collaborative environment is vital. Responsibilities:

  1. Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  2. Coordinate and review water balance and water quality modelling work completed in-house and by our consultants to support mine plan evaluations, regulatory applications, and the planning, design, and operation of water quality mitigation projects
  3. Support in the preparation and review of water modelling reports to meet permitting requirements and regulatory submissions
  4. Work with water management leads from our operations to optimize water management to support operational water supply needs and the best outcomes for water quality, and develop feasible mitigation in coordination with partners based on permitted mine life
  5. Complete water quality modelling work, as required
  6. Implement and develop water management tools, in alignment with long term site water management strategies, and regulatory authorizations
  7. Apply findings from research and investigations to improve the accuracy of water quality projections
  8. Communicate water modeling methods and results to internal and external stakeholders, such as regulators and First Nations representatives
  9. Advise on the development and optimization of groundwater, surface water, and climate monitoring programs

Qualifications:

  1. Engineering or Science degree in an environmental science related field, such as Hydrology, Geochemistry, or Geoscience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Relevant professional accreditation, or eligible for accreditation, such as the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (EGBC); Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration
  3. Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience with a focus on flow and water quality modelling
  4. Technical knowledge of water quality planning tools and demonstrated experience in the application of GoldSim software
  5. Experience in mine planning, water management and knowledge of federal and provincial mining water practices and regulatory compliance is as asset

Benefits:

Salary Range: $96,800

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity. Successful candidates must be willing to satisfy the pre-employment requirements of a pre-employment drug screen and three professional references.
