About the role

The Energy Manager North America supports the Energy Director in energy procurement for Alcoa in the region. This role is critical to Alcoa’s current and future operations, and well positioned in the energy industry.

Energy is key to the aluminum industry and is the main driver of competitiveness between smelters. Nearly half of Alcoa’s aluminum production capacity is located in North America.

Reporting to the Energy Director, North America, you will:

• Assist with strategic negotiations for power contracts and other major projects, including renewable power development;
• Manage day-to-day energy issues to ensure sufficient energy procurement at competitive rates. This includes purchasing natural gas, trading CO2 allowances, reviewing contracted/take or pay volumes, etc.;
• Be responsible for market and regulatory Intelligence to support business decisions, forecasting regulated rates and market prices;
• Manage compliance matters, mostly with FERC in the US;
• Prepare analyses and material in cooperation with External affairs related to energy and CO2 policy;
• Answer energy-related questions from Operations and other groups;
• Work collaboratively with the Legal department to ensure alignment and compliance in all commercial operations;
• Maintain updated procedures over all energy commercial and regulatory aspects;
• Represent the Energy team on internal groups and represent Alcoa on external organizations; and
• Take part in the evolution of Alcoa’s global energy strategy.

About you

• You have showcased your energy expertise for at least 5 years for an energy company, a large industrial energy customer, in private practice or with other stakeholders.
  • Professional standing (attorney, engineer, CPA) a plus
• You have in-depth knowledge of energy markets with a good understanding of power contracts and financial reporting/models
• You have a creative and rigorous approach to solving problems with an ability to make sound, practical and balanced judgements.
• You are agile and have a high level of initiative, and able to work with multi-disciplinary teams towards driving improvement outcomes.
• You have excellent written and oral communication skills, in French and English, as you will need to interact with stakeholders in both Canada and the US.
