As Sr. Manager, Credit Execution within Commercial Banking, Western Canada, you will play an integral role as we grow National Bank’s portfolio of clients throughout Western Canada. In this position you will be responsible for leading a team of underwriting professionals that will focus on both growth and risk objectives. Working closely with Commercial Account Managers, Associate Vice Presidents and Credit Risk Management, you will have a direct and positive impact on your team members, colleagues, clients and the Bank’s growth objectives thanks to your deep knowledge of, and experience with, commercial lending.

Your Job:

  • Lead a team of Western Canada based credit underwriters, providing coaching & mentoring, and develop a pipeline of key talent;
  • Support the Commercial Banking, Western Canada team in managing, and growing, an existing portfolio of commercial lending relationships, by completing assessment of existing and potential clients to determine alignment with the Banks product offering, financing structures and risk appetite;
  • Work with team members on initial transaction analysis and deal structuring;
  • Manage and review credit applications before submission to Credit Risk Management to ensure they meet the highest standards of financial analysis, credit structuring and risk identification & mitigation, while ensuring that internal policies are adhered to;
  • Occasionally author credit applications for the most complex transactions;
  • Provide assistance to the underwriting team with the presentation of their credit applications and challenge team members to think beyond the surface to develop financing scenarios that meet both client needs and the Bank's risk criteria;
  • Coordinate and lead discussions with Credit Risk Management;
  • Manage and monitor the loan portfolio to ensure alignment with the Bank’s established parameters;
  • Work with Account Representatives and back-office staff to ensure required conditions are met prior to funding; and
  • Assist the Head of Credit Execution, Western Canada, as required, in reviewing the credit quality of the Commercial Banking, Western Canada portfolio.

Reporting to the Head of Credit Execution, Western Canada, the position will be based in either Calgary or Vancouver. You will operate in a hybrid work environment with both days in the office and at home. Additionally, you will have to occasionally travel for client and team meetings.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics, finance or a related field;
  • Professional designation(s) and/or an advanced degree is considered a strong asset;
  • 10+ years of related commercial banking experience;
  • Experience building, developing and leading a team of high performing credit underwriting professionals;
  • Exceptional commercial credit analysis skills, and the ability to creatively problem solve;
  • Clear, succinct and persuasive credit writing capabilities;
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to blend strong technical knowledge with sound business judgement; and
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to effectively collaborate with partners at all levels.
