Role Overview:
As the Vice President of Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our engineering strategy and leading a diverse team of around 20 professionals across AI, R&D, hardware, and UI/UX. You will report directly to the CEO and be an integral member of the executive team, driving our vision for growth and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development: Inspire, mentor, and guide a multidisciplinary engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the executive team to align engineering initiatives with business goals, managing priorities across product and technology roadmaps.
Technical Oversight: Analyze and enhance the engineering team's productivity and velocity, addressing technical debt while implementing best practices for software development and hardware design.
Resource Management: Expand internal engineering capacity by managing subcontractors and partnerships in hardware design, software development, and AI research.
Product Development: Lead the productization of offshoot products that align with P&L goals, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality outcomes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, ensuring alignment between product management and engineering teams.
Budget Management: Maintain oversight of departmental spending, including cloud hosting costs and third-party software.
Qualifications:
Technical Leadership: Significant experience in engineering leadership roles within scale-up environments, with a proven track record in software development, including cloud technologies.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Experience collaborating closely with product management teams, with a passion for leading high-performing engineering teams.
Hands-on Expertise: Background in architecting and developing complex technical products that combine hardware, firmware, and software across a range of technologies. Experience with cloud computing, including the scalability, reliability, observability, and security of cloud-hosted systems. Working knowledge of services written in Go or Python, container orchestration frameworks like Kubernetes or Nomad, web technologies like Vue or React, serverless computing like Lambda, or similar.
Outsourcing Experience: Demonstrated experience working with outsourced design firms for hardware and software projects.
Adaptability: Comfortable in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments, with a willingness to tackle challenges head-on.
Flexibility: Proven ability to manage products across multiple and varied markets.
Nice to Have:
Familiarity with camera-based imaging, metrology, or time-of-flight laser mapping technologies.
Background in machine learning, or computer vision.
Experience in prop-tech or insur-tech sectors.
