Building Automation Specialist

The Building Automation Specialist is in the Planning, Development & Construction department at the University of Saskatchewan. The PD&C department is responsible for new construction projects on campus as well as major renovations to existing buildings.Primary Purpose: The Building Automation Specialist is responsible to provide project management, design, documentation, programming and commissioning for building automation systems on campus. The team provides and maintains a computerized network of electronic devices designed to control various mechanical systems in buildings, primarily to monitor and control indoor air temperature and provide sufficient ventilation for occupants and laboratory processes, and to reduce building energy use through equipment scheduling and various demand response functions. The Specialist is responsible for the development and support of these systems.Nature of Work: The Building Automation Specialist is involved in all aspects of controls design and implementation on campus. This includes the production of AutoCAD design drawings, related controls software, commissioning and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical control systems and providing technical support, direction and training to controls personnel. The Specialist provides project management of small to large scale controls projects, including cost and time estimates. The Specialist will work collaboratively with a diverse team consisting of trades people, engineers, technologists, consultants and contractors. The Building Automation Specialist must be able to manage deadlines and competing priorities, keep abreast of technology changes, and work effectively with clients, colleagues and other stakeholders.Typical Duties or Accountabilities:Designs safe and reliable controls systems ensuring that the designs conform to University standards and that sustainable controls strategies are in place for all controls projects; including LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards;Effectively communicates design intent through AutoCAD drawings and supplementary documentation to various stakeholders;Tracks and manages controls project scope, quality, and costs, implementing changes where required and ensuring communication is maintained with the appropriate stakeholders;Works collaboratively within a team coordinating commissioning efforts to ensure that the performance of systems is optimized;Creates and programs databases and graphical HMI for building automation systems ensuring design intent is adhered to and data is effectively communicated;Evaluates and selects equipment to ensure quality and cost effectiveness over the life cycle of the equipment;Assist various stakeholders to effectively troubleshoot controls problems and provide support and training to other controls personnel;Maintains current knowledge and understanding of building automation systems and relevant regulatory requirements;Supports campus sustainability commitments by demonstrating and advocating sustainability best practices in decision-making and in daily actions.Education: A technologist’s diploma from a recognized technical institution in one of the disciplines related to the Controls section. Membership in Saskatchewan Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (SASTT) would be considered an asset.Experience: A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the building automation controls engineering field with preference for HVAC design/production experience and controls commissioning experience. Preference will be given to individuals with IT related experience.Skills:Fluency in electrical and mechanical systems and the ability to communicate complex technical information;Proficiency with AutoCAD;Effective analytical and problem-solving skills and creativity;An orientation to detail;A track record of taking initiative and working proactively and independently;The ability to prioritize work to complete initiatives and/or projects on-time, on-budget and in alignment with client needs.Assets include written, oral and graphical communications experience relating to controls technology.Department: Facilities Sustainability & EngineeringStatus: PermanentEmployment Group: ASPAShift:Full Time Equivalent (FTE): 1.0Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $67,681.00 - 105,753.00 per annum.
