The Roots of Empathy program for elementary school children and Seeds of Empathy, for pre-school children in childcare centres, were created by social entrepreneur Mary Gordon. Roots of Empathy has supported the emotional development and well-being of one million children.

Headquartered in Toronto, and governed by a Board of Directors, the organization delivers its empathy-based programs in all 10 provinces and on four continents in multiple languages.

About the Opportunity

Located in Edmonton, Alberta and reporting to the Director, Canada, the Alberta Provincial Manager is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with government, education partners and community agencies, managing third party agreements, and meeting funder deliverables. In collaboration with colleagues, the Provincial Manager will be accountable for coordinating, planning, and developing programming, implementing and establishing strategic partnerships in Alberta.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Sustain and forge new partnerships within the government, education sector, and other relevant sectors related to program funding and delivery.
• Develop and implement a work plan to achieve annual program deliverables, which seeks out opportunities for growth.
• Manage and oversee the Roots of Empathy and Seeds of Empathy programs throughout Alberta.
• Achieve annual performance targets, established by the Director, Canada.
• Meet the deliverables of our government and non-government funding agreements.
• Collect and manage data from communities and develop Roots of Empathy and Seeds of Empathy program reports for the province and funders, as required.
• Assist with Roots of Empathy research initiatives, as required.
• Monitor progress and provide weekly updates on the status of program plans, contracts and agreements to the Director, Canada.
• Supervise local program coordinators that support program planning and delivery in Alberta.
• Act as the senior Roots of Empathy and Seeds of Empathy representative in Alberta and bring forward provincial needs/issues to the Director, Canada.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with provincial groups across Alberta i.e., Parent Advisory Councils.
• Oversee the coordination of annual Roots of Empathy training projections to meet provincial targets and diversify new Instructor profiles within school boards.
• Make presentations to raise and maintain the awareness of the program: i.e., government officials, school board representatives, principals, teachers, parent groups, agencies, and communities, to meet program projections.
• Work with the Roots of Empathy Communications team to promote public awareness of the program at community events and respond to media and VIP requests.

Education and Experience

• Post-secondary education degree, diploma, or certificate in a relevant or complimentary discipline.
• 5+ years’ experience in progressive management role. Additional would be an asset.
• Proven experience in strategic planning, program development, leadership, partnerships, policy and/or community development.
• Managerial experience within a not-for-profit organization, public or education sectors preferred.
• Experience or knowledge with Alberta education and related government administration.
• Prior knowledge of the Roots of Empathy organization and programs would be an asset.
• Strong problem-solving skills, ability to take initiative, work independently, flexible, and comfortable within a fast-paced working environment.
• Competent with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Accomplished oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to engage and communicate effectively with a broad range of audiences and stakeholders.
• Skilled in project management with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, time management and attention to deadlines and deliverables.
• Strong interpersonal skills, and collaborative within a team environment.
• Ability to travel; valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
• Fluency (oral and written skills) in additional languages, especially French, is an asset.
• Ability to perform light lifting (e.g., training materials).
