Senior Substations Engineer (CIVIL)

Maskwa High Voltage (MHV) is an engineering consulting firm with offices in Calgary and Regina that provides design and engineering services to the electric power delivery industry. Our expertise includes all aspects of Transmission, Substation and Distribution systems for voltages ranging from 4160V to 500kV.

Opportunity:

MHV is currently seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join our team in Calgary to support our substation engineering department. We offer a dynamic work environment with a highly experienced technical team, where you will be offered guidance and hands on training and continuously challenged in all aspects of the engineering and design process.

Responsibilities:

· Provide senior leadership, guidance and mentorship to the substation civil team.

· From time to time, support other Maskwa delivery teams (Transmission and Distribution) as required.

· Review designs against applicable industry codes and client standards as well as internal MHV process.

· Work closely with other disciplines to coordinate design efforts.

· Prepare Design Basis Memorandum (DBM) and Engineering Design Specification (EDS) documents.

· Prepare cost estimates, material take offs, scopes of work, and design packages.

· Prepare relevant Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings and engineering reports.

· Write construction scope of work and prepare IFC construction binders.

· Provide engineering support during construction.

· Oversee the preparation of, As-Built drawings and project close out data.

· Act as subject matter expert supporting earthworks, foundation, and structural aspects of substation engineering.

· Provide technical guidance to the design teams.

· Track project progress for engineering activities to ensure budgets and schedules are met.

· Provide weekly updates to senior management regarding projects progress, budgets and

resourcing.

· Provide on the job training for new hires and junior members of the team.

· Maintain in depth knowledge of client and industry standards.

· Conduct quality control reviews of project deliverables to ensure technical requirements are met.

· Identify and develop new tools and processes to increase working efficiency.

· Complete engineering and material cost estimates for bids/proposals.

· Maintain excellent working relationships with existing clients.

· Actively promote Safety in Design.

· Possibility of travel for site visits and to provide technical support during construction.

Qualifications:

· Proven track record in civil design of high voltage substation facilities.

· Minimum 10 years’ work experience.

· Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide spectrum of clients.

· B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and registered as an active member with APEGA.

· Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives.

· Positive attitude, strong client focus and results driven.

· Experience in the utility industry.

Preferred:

· 10-15 years experience working in utility substations,

· Previous experience leading a design team and mentoring junior engineers.

· Competency in a broad range of civil sub-disciplines including earthworks, foundations and geotechnical and structural.
