As a Senior Process Safety Engineer in our Engineering Services team, you will engage with our engineers and designers, with operating area teams, and with process safety management stakeholders to integrate process safety into our engineering projects. In this dual role, you will rely on your process safety expertise and judgement to plan and complete process hazard analyses and produce process engineering deliverables. Your success will enable our multi-disciplinary team of engineers to execute safely, efficiently, reliably, and productively on a variety of capital / expense projects and energy transition work.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, lead, and facilitate multiple types of risk/hazard assessments with stakeholders, including What-if, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, Procedure PHAs, Facility Siting Reviews, and Consequence Modelling.

  • Develop, implement, further progress, and manage our process safety risk identification and analysis processes within Engineering Services.

  • Conduct in-depth data analysis, interpret, and present study findings to the Senior Engineering Services Leadership Team as needed; provide insight to support decision making related to risk management such as facility siting concerns. Develop and distribute study reports. 

  • Identify, select, and coordinate participation in risk assessments from subject matter experts within Area Operations, Technical, Reliability, and Projects teams.

  • Bring back learnings from the industry with respect to Process Safety.

  • Coach and mentor our process technical team and others to develop our process safety, process engineering, and PHA capabilities.

  • Collaborate with Front End and other Engineering Services disciplines, Process Engineering, Refinery Technical, Process Safety Management and Project Execution Teams.

  • Collaborate on project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors and engineering contractors. Direct, review and approve their work and deliverables.

  • Support the process engineering team with engineering analyses and deliverables including Heat and Material Balance and process simulations, hydraulic calculations, preparation of equipment/ instrument datasheets, line lists, and process design basis, management of PFDs and P&IDs, development of operating guidelines etc.

Your Skills:

  • Proficiency with Process Hazard/Risk Assessment methods including What-If, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, and associated tools such as PHA-Pro is essential.

  • Demonstrated PHA/HAZOP Training and Certification is preferred.

  • Competency with North American codes, standards, regulations and industry practices related to process design and process safety in oil & gas refining is expected.

  • Proficiency with Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Consequence Modelling, and Facility Siting methods and tools such as Phast is preferred.

  • Demonstrated competency in remote and in-person hazard/risk assessment Facilitation Skills; able to keep a group engaged, focused and aligned.

  • Strong Technical Report Writing and Presentation skills.

  • Excellent understanding of oil refinery operations and associated economic drivers.

  • Proficiency with the following process engineering software tools is an asset – Aspen HYSYS or Aveva PRO/II, EDR or HTRI, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, Synergi Pipeline Simulation (Stoner), PHAST

  • The work will require periodic visits to our operating facilities. You must be able to work in the field, including working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards.

Your Experience:

  • University degree in Chemical Engineering with P.Eng. designation (or immediate eligibility) in New Brunswick is required.

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in process safety and process design in chemical, petrochemical or oil & gas plants. A significant portion of that experience shall be in PHA/HAZOP/Risk Assessment Facilitation roles.
