Empowering University Students with Disabilities or Mental Health Conditions

We are seeking dedicated Specialist Mentors to work with students in Aberdeen, providing personalized support to help them navigate academic challenges.

About the Role

As a Specialist Mentor, you will be a trusted advisor for students, assisting them throughout the full academic year. You will help students reflect on their experiences, introduce strategies to overcome barriers, and support them on a 1-2-1 basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create strategies around organisation and time management
  • Break down tasks to meet deadlines
  • Achieve an appropriate balance in study and daily living
  • Manage anxiety, stress or low mood
  • Prepare for new experiences
  • Build on confidence and strengths to become an independent learner

Requirements

As this is a specialist role, you must hold membership with one of the following professional bodies:

  • BACP - The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • BPS - British Psychological Society
  • HCPC - Health and Care Professions Council
  • NCPS - National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society
  • NMC - Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • SWE - Social Work England
  • SCW - Social Care Wales
  • UMHAN - The University Mental Health Advisers Network
  • COSCA - Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of working with clients with disabilities and or mental health conditions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Relevant professional body memberships
  • Ability to identify ways of helping students to build on their learning strengths
  • Punctuality and reliability
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to manage a caseload of students
