Join Triovest, one of the largest privately-owned Canadian commercial real estate companies, as a Director, Risk Management in Toronto. Reporting to the EVP, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary, the successful candidate will oversee and direct the insurance risk management function, which includes placement and management of Triovest’s corporate and portfolio insurance programs and claims management. The Director, Risk Management will act as a business partner to facilitate consistent risk and indemnity treatment in Triovest’s contracts to conform to Triovest’s risk management objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all insurance programs, including implementing cost effective policy renewals, identifying risk appetite, monitoring the market, and the development and execution of an annual strategy.
  • Develop annual operational insurance forecasts and budgets and determine the internal allocation of all premium, losses and costs.
  • Partner with internal teams to review, analyze, draft, and negotiate risk and indemnity provisions in lease, construction, contractor, property and asset management, and other agreements.
  • Manage an efficient claims administration infrastructure across multiple asset and development and construction programs, including property, causality, automobile, environmental, and corporate fidelity, professional liability, crime and D&O.
  • Develop an effective program to identify retained loss exposures across all insurance programs and direct the remediation, repair, and recovery of those losses, wherever possible.
  • Manage the process for gathering and analyzing physical property and risk information to support the establishment and maintenance of the schedule of values of all assets.
  • Produce financial, claim, litigation, and risk profile reports and research trends in claim activity and propose solutions or management strategies.
  • Develop and deliver training material on relevant insurance and risk concepts.
  • Assist in designing and implementation of the company's business continuity and emergency response plans.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Finance, or related field.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Professional Risk Manager (PRM), or Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) are highly desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of insurance principles, risk assessment methodologies, and contract law.
  • 7 or more years of experience in risk management, ideally in commercial real estate, with exposure to construction risk management, property or construction insurance underwriting, or brokering within a real estate or construction practice.
  • Experience placing and managing large commercial real estate insurance programs.
  • Experience managing insurance claims, including knowledge of common law and civil liability.
  • Advanced contract management, drafting, and negotiation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance, contract, construction, and common law.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to analyze complex data to identify potential risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate risk-related concepts to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experienced people manager, with a proven track record of leading and developing teams to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive risk management strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with legal, finance, operations, and other departments to achieve risk management objectives.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in risk assessments, contract reviews, and claims management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and propose innovative solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards in all aspects of risk management and business operations.
  • Deep understanding of the commercial real estate industry, including market trends, regulatory requirements, and emerging risks.
