The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities, and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies, practices, and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals, and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive.This position is located in the Industry and Economy Division, at the Paris duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Consumption and Production Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:ResponsibilitiesParticipate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects on the circular economy of plastics, monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation, review relevant documents and reports, identify problems and propose corrective actions.Research, analyze, and present information gathered from diverse sources.Assist in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations, or other research activities and studies.Undertake survey initiatives, design data collection tools, review, analyze, and interpret responses, identify problems/issues, and prepare conclusions.Prepare various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analyze sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.Provide substantive support to consultative meetings, conferences, etc., including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, and preparing documents and presentations.Approach governments, the private sector, and non-profit organizations to acquire grants and co-finance to support project design and implementation.Prepare progress reports summarizing achievements and learning from project implementation, and organize project mid-term reviews and terminal evaluations.Conduct outreach activities; conduct training workshops, seminars, etc.Coordinate activities related to budget and funding, prepare related documents/reports.Collect and analyze data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports.Perform other duties as required.CompetenciesPROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, and approaches relevant to sustainable consumption and production, circular economy, and chemicals and waste.TEAMWORK: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; values others’ ideas and expertise; supports and acts in accordance with final group decisions.PLANNING & ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required.EducationAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, environmental management, environmental economics, or a related field is required.Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively professional experience in project or programme management, administration or related area on sustainable consumption and production, circular economy, chemicals and waste, and plastic pollution is required.LanguagesFluency in English is required.
