Job Description SummaryThe Network Analyst I consults with and analyses user requirements for information network systems and monitors capacity requirements and network performance. This position is responsible provides second level technical, operational, and administrative support for UBC s network infrastructure and systems. Duties are performed in alignment with UBC IT s goals and objectives supporting the University s overall mission and customer business needs. On-call after hours support and off-hours scheduled maintenance is required.Organizational StatusNetwork Infrastructure Services manages the network infrastructure for UBC (also known as UBCNET) facilitating teaching, learning and administrative activities at itsPoint Grey campus and remote locations. The NMC provides planning, design, engineering, analysis, configuration, implementation, support and troubleshooting in theareas of LAN/WAN, campus and data centre networks, and network security in addition to supporting the unique requirements of other key services such as VOIP,wireless, video and multimedia.Reporting to the Manager under the Network Infrastructure Services unit, this position is a member of the NMC team providing support for UBCNET and other relatedservice offerings. This position works closely with other UBC IT teams to support campus enterprise network services as well as liaising with other academic andadministrative clients, vendors, and industry peers.Work PerformedSpecific Duties:- Ensure the operational stability of the campus network by providing implementation, monitoring, and support functions in the following areas: routing and switching,network security, support systems (such as DNS/DHCP, packet shapers, analysis modules), and network management systems.Fulfill service requests and resolve incidents relating to switching, routing, network security, firewall policies, support systems.- Resolves operational problems through detailed analysis of statistics, packet captures, logs with support from team members as necessary; coordinates problemresolution with vendors.- Provide network security operations support including installing, configuring, managing firewalls, VPNs and related network security devices and applications for the UBCnetwork.- Creates and maintains scripts and programs used to automate network operations- Takes initiative to remedy deficiencies, notice where efficiencies can be gained, and recommend enhancements for optimum performance in network operations,infrastructure, and workflows.- Compiles detailed documentation and quality reports for operations and projects.- Provides business and after hours on-call support on a rotational basis and is available off-hours to work on emergency network problems, maintenance, and projectactivities.Core Duties:- Consults with users to determine the required technical support for network systems including monitoring network activity, and troubleshooting and diagnosing networkproblems.- Monitors facilities capacity requirements, schedules requests for bandwidth and adjusts bandwidth on a daily or weekly basis.- Assesses network performance to ensure that it meets the present and future needs of the enterprise.- Assists in the development of disaster recovery plans and executes network test plans.- Analyses user requirements, prepares equipment specifications, and installs and configures or reconfigures network components.- Implements network security procedures and predetermined software or hardware changes to rectify any security issues.- Contributes to the development of best practices, standards, procedures and quality objectives across systems infrastructure or platforms.- Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of currentinformation technology techniques and tools.- Performs other related duties as required.Consequence of Error/JudgementThis position deals directly with the availability, reliability, and security of UBCNET which facilitates academic, research, and administrative computing. Expected to makedecisions and take actions that directly impact UBC s academic faculties, departments and administrative units. Recommendations and actions related to the managementand network architecture will impact the future direction, stability, security, and sustainment of University network services. High attention to detail is required, in addition tothe need to maintain a broad knowledge of all aspects of networks and network operational procedures.Supervision ReceivedWorks under the administrative and broad technical and strategic direction of the Manager and under the strategic technical direction of the Network Architect. May workindependently or with other team members, clients, IT staff in a leading or supporting role on projects and operations. Work is reviewed in terms of objective achievements.Supervision GivenProvides co-ordination of projects and activities as required.Preferred QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related discipline. CCNA or other similar advancedtechnical certification in routing, switching, or network security. Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevantexperience supporting enterprise LAN/WAN, large campus networks, network operations, network security and network management or the equivalent combination ofeducation and experience.Ability to multitask balancing multiple streams of work, prioritizes workload based on management direction, and works under pressure to resolve challenges and meetproject deadlines.Knowledge and experience working in the following areas required:- Routing and Switching: 802.1D, 802.1Q, 802.1s, 802.1w, 802.1X, 802.3ad, 802.1AX; HSRP, OSPF; IPv4 and IPv6.- Network Security: various firewall technologies, firewall policy management, VPN technologies.- Network monitoring, management, analysis and orchestration systems.- Support Systems: DNS, DHCP, Windows, MAC, UNIX, XML.- Scripting: python, perl, or shell. Desirable knowledge:- Routing and Switching: BGP, BGP/MPLS, policy routing, redistribution, multicast; IPv4 and IPv6- Network Security: various firewall technologies, AAA, ACLs, device hardening, IDS/IPS, port scanning, vACLs, best practices.- Data Centre: network technologies- Service Provider: MPLS.- Problem resolution of issues through packet capture and analysis and other tools.- Software-defined networksCisco certifications, an asset.Collaboration - Takes initiative to actively participate in team interactions.
