Mechanical Design/Estimating Development Manager

Join our reputable firm specialising in Design and Build (D&B) projects primarily focused on new projects and facilities, along with expertise in education, leisure, commercial, and industrial. With a portfolio of long-term clients, we engage in negotiated, two-stage, preferred bidder, or restricted tender list opportunities. Our mechanical tenders and contracts typically range from £100k to £5m, requiring meticulous attention to detail and extensive experience in mechanical services.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Estimator / Design Manager to play a pivotal role in our tendering process and design delivery.
The ideal candidate will have comprehensive experience in mechanical services, strong client management skills, and the ability to deliver well-considered proposals within project timelines.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Tender Period:
* Collaborate with the Commercial Director and other stakeholders to identify and assess future tender opportunities, considering project type, client requirements, and strategic fit.
* Develop tender opportunities with existing and potential clients, providing budget costs and high-level schemes where necessary.
* Assist in the development of design briefs/specifications and assess the suitability of tender opportunities based on various factors.
* Liaise with the Contracts Director for input on programming and coordinate with estimators to manage tender deliverables effectively.
Tender/Post Tender Period:
* Manage the tender process, including assessment of tender information, RFIs, and development of principal design elements/systems.
* Produce two-stage tender reports and submissions, ensuring the correct approach, scheme, and presentation align with project requirements.
* Coordinate mid-tender interviews and adjudicate final tender design and costings in collaboration with estimators and Contracts Director.
* Oversee the post-tender process, handling queries, addendums, technical appraisals, and attending post-tender interviews as required.
* Assist in achieving an agreed contract sum and scope with clients for insertion into the contract.
Design Delivery:
* Facilitate an efficient handover between estimating and design teams, setting up the contract design process and managing deliverables.
* Collaborate with design engineers and principal mechanical engineers to integrate and coordinate design elements effectively.
* Monitor design progress, oversee design and drawing production, and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
* Lead services coordination with building fabric and other services, addressing design variations and advising clients on cost and effect.
* Manage subcontract design order content, sign off subcontract design, and estimation invoices.
Other Associated Duties:
* Survey existing sites and systems, developing upgrade schemes, strategies, and reports as needed.
* Lead in resolving client design and pricing issues pre or post-contract, approving changes to design drawings proposed by the contracting team.
* Assist in design changes during the contract period due to client changes, ensuring efficient handover between design and contracting departments.
Requirements:
* Extensive experience in mechanical services, preferably in a D&B environment.
* Strong technical skills and ability to deliver considered proposals within project timelines.
* Excellent client management and communication skills.
* Proficiency in project management and coordination.
* Knowledge of statutory requirements and regulations.
