The Role: Chief Executive Officer

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and CEO will be responsible for providing senior leadership of overall operations and success for Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. The CEO will provide visionary development, strategic direction, and is responsible for building the Foundation’s provincial and national donor base, while providing leadership to senior management, directing the alignment of organizational priorities, key decisions, and governance to the financial and human resources.

The CEO will plan, complement and reinforce effective provincial practices across the Foundation and provide strategic leadership, building upon an environment of diversity and ethical culture to the JPCHF Executive Management Team, Board of Directors and Committees, with overall general oversight to JPCHF employees and policies.

The CEO serves as the administrative lead and link to the Government of Saskatchewan, Ministry of Health, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Canada's Children's Hospital Foundations (CCHF), Children's Miracle Network (CMN), Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF), University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina and Jim Pattison Children's Hospital, ensuring the Foundation’s activities are congruent with funding priorities and best practises, and that all major partners are aware of the Foundation’s requirements including donor relations, donor related materials, development and financial plans and various related matters.

The CEO will serve as the “public face” of the Foundation, building internal and external relationships to inspire and secure philanthropy in support of the JPCHF, having a strong provincial presence. The CEO will also serve as the leader in creating and sustaining strong provincial and national brand support in keeping with the Foundation’s Mission, Vision and Values. The CEO will be responsible for establishing and implementing a long-term strategic plan, carry a significant major gifts portfolio and will support Foundation team members as they engage various potential supporters.

The CEO will ensure that the best interest of the Foundation and those served through the Foundation are represented through effective and irrepressible advocacy. The CEO will concentrate efforts to support maternal and pediatric enhancements throughout Saskatchewan and ensure that the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation is recognized as a provincial organization, articulate of the organization’s vision to meet strategic priorities. The CEO will possess the ability to communicate that Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation is provincial in scope and works within the entire province, with health regions, urban and rural communities, First Nations, Metis/First Nations Bands to fulfill the Foundation’s diverse objectives.

Reporting directly to the CEO are:

  • CFO/COO responsible for finance, human resources, information systems, and security
  • VP Philanthropy & Strategy responsible for all areas of philanthropy including annual gifts, lottery, donor stewardship and events
  • Communications Director responsible for all areas of communication, media relations and marketing, and liaison with Saskatchewan Health Authority
  • Executive Assistant directly supports the President & CEO and is responsible for administration, liaison with SHA, Government of Saskatchewan and JPCHF Board

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising and Development

  • Position the foundation as a leading fundraising not-for-profit organization devoted to raising money for Saskatchewan maternal and children’s health care and research.
  • Design and implement long- term sustainable funding strategies to support the work of the Foundation.
  • Develop and execute diverse strategies and tactics for all major gifts, capital campaigns and fundraising initiatives to meet current and future provincial maternal and children’s health care and research needs.
  • Manage own philanthropic portfolio, proposals, prospects, donors, fundraising activities, philanthropic revenues, etc. to meet current and emerging financial needs, annual grant requirements, growing annual revenue and planned giving.
  • Marketing and branding.

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Provide overall administrative leadership for the Foundation by establishing, in conjunction with the Board and Executive leadership, the overall fundraising strategies, campaigns, and operating plans for all programs supporting provincial programs, Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, (Research), related maternal and paediatric facilities, inclusive of the Alvin Buckwold Children's Centre, KCC.
  • Provide executive leadership in the development, establishment and communication of policies designed to support the Foundation’s Mission, Vision and Values, providing impactful and engaging donor and donor prospect experience.
  • Provide inspirational leadership, coaching and mentoring and ongoing empowerment to a dedicated team of professionals to achieve the Foundation's goals.
  • Assess, identify and take action on internal and external issues that affect the Foundation.
  • Supervise and oversee all staff
  • Provide financial oversight, ensure financial health of the Foundation through sound financial management including planning, budgeting, forecasting, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Provide leadership to staff in guiding them to achieve goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan.
  • Develop and build strategic alliances with other key foundations, associations, institutes, hospitals, boards, committees, senior sector related bodies, etc., to support achievement of the Foundation's goals and objectives.
  • Champion the Foundation’s equity, diversity and inclusion within the JPCHF.

Board of Directors and Committee Development

  • Oversee the development and proposal of policies that ensures accountability and appropriate risk management.
  • Support the effective governance operations of the Board of Directors.
  • Provide critical support and insight to support the development of the Foundation’s strategic plan.
  • Facilitate the organization of regular Board meetings, committee meetings, special meetings and annual retreats.
  • Work with the Volunteer Chair and the Board of Directors and other committees to ensure positive relationships and communication amongst members.
  • Identify priorities for Board consideration aligning with the Strategic Plan.
  • Provide financial and risk reports to the Board and assurance that the Foundation has fulfilled commitment to the Canada Revenue Agency along with statutory remittances and communicate any deficiencies.

Donor & Fund Development/Community Involvement

  • Be visible in the provincial community as a philanthropic leader.
  • Manage and develop key strategic donor relationships and a major gifts portfolio with a focus on those with capacity for principle and transformational gift investments inclusive of appropriate recognition.
  • Work in conjunction with the Executive Management Team to regularly review and optimise donor relationship strategies.
  • Function as the lead for the Foundation liaising with the leadership of Government, SHA, Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and related organizations.
  • Enhance respectful relationships with past, current and future prospective donors.
  • Foster strong relationships with key fundraising partners in Saskatchewan.
  • With the Chair of the Board, represent the public face of the foundation in a professional manner.

The Person

Professional and Personal Qualifications

  • A university degree or equivalent experience in fundraising and business management.
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience at a leadership level, preferably in a large, complex, multi-stakeholder organization.
  • Previous executive leadership of a substantial capital campaign would be a decided asset.
  • Possesses a strong affinity for the role fulfilled by an academic health/sciences complex/organization.
  • Demonstrated senior fundraising experience in a major foundation setting or a related complex environment.
  • Experience working with and supporting leadership volunteers, such as a Board of Directors.
  • Ability to consider emerging trends and use of relevant data sets for a non-profit organization.
  • Experience with scenario-based planning and strategy mapping experiences would be an asset.
  • Relevant fundraising professional credential such as Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) would be considered and asset but is not essential.

The role of the CEO is demanding, requiring an exceptional combination of leadership ability, a demonstrated record of accomplishment on a substantial scale in fundraising, and a variety of personal and professional attributes equal to the challenges of this role.

  • Proven commitments to healthcare philanthropy with a successful track record closing major and transformational gifts.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities that have inspired and increased engagement with donors, volunteers, the general public, hospital or other non-fundraising partners and other external constituencies.
  • History as a passionate, courageous and values-driven leader whose approach is congruent with the Mission, Vision, Values/Code of Conduct of the Foundation and congruent with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
  • Experience supporting a Board of Directors and Board sub-committees through the delivery of comprehensive reporting on strategic and annual business plans and other key aspects of the operations and risk management.
  • Has sound business and financial acumen managing multi-million dollar budget.
  • An exemplary track record of effective interaction, cultivation, and support of senior volunteers.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in big picture and strategic and entrepreneurial thinking with the ability to innovate, conceptualize and execute plans that achieve annual and strategic objectives.
  • Highly developed public speaking and written skills with the ability to skilfully articulate passion and organization’s vision and an impact with experience speaking at a local, provincial, national and international level.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills to assess change, challenges, develop solutions and assess and mitigate risk in an innovative and effective manner.
  • Leadership and management skills that have promoted a positive culture where staff and teams are able to grow and develop.
  • A leadership style that is respectful, honest, participatory, empowering, and enables teams to meet annual and strategic goals.
  • The ability to recruit superb talent and coach and mentor staff to realize their full potential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to EDI that informs and supports an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible workplace.
  • Strong relationship building skills including the ability to work within a matrix management structure, while also successfully engaging a wide range of audiences in support of organizational objectives.
  • Experience and comprehension of CRM software (Blackbaud, Raiser’s Edge).
