The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is currently recruiting for the position of Director of Human Resources. This mission-driven organization seeks an experienced HR professional who will recruit and retain talent to support a range of activities at AWWA, including our industry-leading conference and events, engineering, publishing, and government affairs teams. Compensation is dependent upon qualifications; the hiring range for this job is $157,000-$165,000 per year. Please submit cover letter with resume. Position is open until filled. Position Objective Plan, direct and coordinate all human resource activities, policies, and programs for AWWA. This key leadership position is actively engaged in both day-to-day employee issues and high-level strategic planning. This position participates on the senior leadership team and is a sought-after adviser to the executive team. Essential Job Functions The following essential duties and responsibilities generally reflect the primary expectations of this position but are not intended to be all-inclusive. Director-level expectations – contribute to AWWA’s annual business plan, participate in strategic planning as needed, participate on AWWA’s senior leadership team, attend executive team meetings as needed, and manage department budget. Workforce planning – develop a three-to-five year staffing plan, including succession planning, leadership development, and market business trends. Employee lifecycle planning – develop policies and strategies to manage recruiting, hiring, onboarding, retention, termination, and offboarding. Staff communication and meetings – coordinate and run monthly all-staff meetings, ad-hoc all-staff meetings, and disseminate company-wide communications pertaining to workforce issues. Total compensation philosophy – develop AWWA’s total compensation philosophy and strategy to effectively recruit and retain high-quality employees. HRIS Evaluation – evaluate and optimize human resources software and systems to balance employee ease of use and satisfaction with the operational needs of the human resources department. Staff and volunteer training – coordinate and develop best practices and compliance training on issues including but not limited to interview training, unconscious bias, and sexual harassment. Compliance – ensure adherence to all applicable laws and regulations. Ensure employee handbook is updated on an annual or as-needed basis. Job Qualifications Education, Certification or Formal Training: Bachelor’s degree in human resources or other related area required; master’s degree preferred. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification attractive. Work Experience (including computer skills): Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in Human Resources, including time as a departmental leader. Minimum of five (5) years’ supervisory experience required. Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Teams required. Intermediate knowledge of HRIS systems preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Support AWWA’s mission and vision in all interactions. Strong understanding of business operations in a multi-departmental organization. Demonstrated strengths in organization, attention-to-detail, follow-through, analytics, reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Demonstrated ability to work effectively at both detailed and big-picture levels and to drive projects forward. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt easily to a fast-paced, changing environment and to follow through on tasks and assignments. Language Skills Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to successfully perform the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position. Vision Requirements Vision adequate to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of position. Physical Demands Physical requirements can vary. These must be reviewed with management. However, in general, the position requires the following physical activities: Ability to lift minimum of 2 pounds to a maximum of 15 pounds; able to sit for extended periods of time with some standing, stooping, lifting, walking, stretching, reaching; moderate range of body motions. Ability to hear and interact by phone/video and in person clearly and efficiently. Ability to use computer and all peripherals for extended periods of time. Compensation/Benefits Compensation is dependent upon qualifications; the hiring range for this job is $157,000-$165,000 and is paired with a comprehensive benefits package that includes: Immediate eligibility and vesting for retirement savings plan with a 6% employer contribution and 3% company match upon hire.
