Join our team as an Independent Authoriser, where you'll play a crucial role in authorising, coordinating, and reviewing complex confined space sewer entry works. You will support the isolation and diversion of wastewater networks and work within the Health, Safety, and Wellbeing team to provide essential support to wider operational teams and their contractors. Your responsibilities include producing and maintaining the IAB dashboard and liaising with the Wastewater Control Centre regarding confined space call figures. 

What you’ll be doing as an Independent Authoriser
  • Evaluate Necessity: Challenge the need for confined space entries to ensure they are essential.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide expert input on complex Water and Wastewater entry activities.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure method statements and risk assessments are approved and conduct final reviews focused on confined space entry elements.
  • Audit Systems: Review and audit safe systems of work for sewer entry activities.
  • Operational Feedback: Provide feedback to operations on how authorisations are achieved.
  • Coordination: Notify relevant teams/individuals of upcoming works and secure agreements from impacted parties.
  • Conflict Management: Coordinate all confined space activities to prevent conflicts with other works.
  • Communication: Facilitate regular communication between teams through meetings, conference calls, and briefings.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement and future development of safe sewer entry processes.
Base Location – Beckton STW in East London. This is a hybrid role with minimum of 2 days a week working on site/office based, else  can be remote
Working hours: 7:30  am to 3:30 pm but  some flexibility can be discussed on the interview stage
Once training is complete, the role includes a 24/7 standby rota, 1 in every 6 weeks.

What you should bring to the role
  • Solid understanding of Health & Safety practices.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Strong communication skills with proven planning experience.
  • Strong customer focus and a proactive, self-starter attitude.
  • Understanding of the Water/Wastewater business; familiarity with sewer or water networks is desirable.
  • Full driving license and willingness to travel across the Thames Water region.
