Showed at Orsay Museum , Signac the art collector reflects the interests and preferences of a figure who was particularly active on the art scene of his day. Self-taught, Signac learnt his craft by studying closely Impressionist works, notably by Monet, Degas and Caillebotte, pieces by most of whom were to be found in his collection.
The role Signac played, first in founding, then in organizing the Salon des artistes indépendants placed him at the junction of the various avant-garde movements of the period. While he often favored the works of his neo-Impressionist friends, Signac, as an art collector, also took a keen interest in the Nabis. With the next generation of artists, his passion for color led him to appreciate the Fauves.
